About the Faculty of Engineering
Overview of Technical Services
Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering Technical Services iLab Core. The Faculty of Engineering offers a broad range of technical services, these are provided through our departments. Our significant capabilities support many activities, including: manufacturing and fabrication (mechanical, civil and electronics) equipment, chemical and materials expertise, laboratory and testing support, occupational health and safety, design (CAD) and many others. We support the technical requirements of academics, students, departments and external (e.g., industry and government) partners. If you have technical requirements for a project in research or teaching, or simply need advice, please contact us through the request services tab on this page.
Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering
We provide mechanical workshop capabilities including milling, turning, sheet metalwork and welding, and electronic workshop capabilities including surface-mount testing and repair. We also offer CAD design services for mechanical and electronics work. The ECSE team also provide CNC aluminum maching services - additional information on our capability can be found here.
Trained users will soon be able to request equipment bookings on the Department's iLab core (currently under construction).
Department of Materials Science and Engineering
Materials engineers make a unique contribution – not just by making new materials, but also by improving what we already have. Here at Monash, our graduates and researchers are making things stronger, lighter, more functional, more sustainable and more cost-effective. Their contributions underpin all aspects of engineering, manufacturing and health sciences. Not surprisingly – they’re increasingly in demand.
Our Technical Officers are able to assist with machine malfunctions, repairs, design consultations and the machining of items related to research.
Trained users may request equipment bookings on the Department's iLab core. Training for the New Horizons LN2 Facility may also be requested through the Department's core.

Makerspace Network Specialised Request
Design and Manufacturing Support Request (Makerspace Network Specialised Request)
Whenever possible Makerspace staff will aim to induct and guide users to enable them to learn by doing.
This form is intended for complex manufacturing that requires dedicated support from our team of highly skilled technical staff.
The main aim of the Monash Makerspace Network is to enable and empower users to Dream, Design and Make. In these spaces students engage with authentic projects, and develop skills for their future careers.
The Makerspace Project Studios in Building 60 is the active and ambitious home of our student teams initiative and a collaborative space that supports the entrepreneurial activities of our start-ups at the co-located Monash Generator.
The Makerspace Design and Build Studios in the Woodside Building focuses on rapid prototyping and computer aided design, while also hosting equipment and facilities to accommodate a wide range of more traditional ‘making’ processes. This space supports engineering FYP students, hosts dedicated sessions for scheduled teaching units, and is available for use by suitably inducted engineering faculty staff.
For more information on accessing these facilities please visit our website.
Capabilities of the network include:
3D printing in PLA, ABS, Carbon Fibre, Resin and Nylon
Laser cutting of plywood & acrylic
CNC machining up to 5 axis
Manual machining workshop
MIG & TIG welding
Low voltage electrical diagnostic and assembly areas
3D scanning
Sewing & textiles
CAD / CAM workstations
Woodwork shop
Composites shop
Sanding bays
Paint booths
